To The Hills

Between 200,000 and 300,000 UK homes are currently off-grid. This lifestyle involves making adjustments, such as using solar panels instead of mains electricity. However, there are a select few people in the world who take this to the extreme. This varies from communities of thatched roundhouses, or living in the wilderness to claim back life from Parkinson’s.

To the Hills is a brand identity for a quarterly magazine that documents the lives of these communities. Each issue discusses a unique community and explores how they work around the essential items that are provided by the grid.

Running through the brand identity are a series of icons that refer to an essential element that living off-grid causes issues with. Featured in these icons is an adaptable symbol of a leaf that changes depending on the location of the issue and the foliage that can be found in the area.

As living off the grid is rooted in environmentalism, this has played a key role in the visual style of the brand. The paper stock is recycled, with the front cover being made from seaweed, to create a rough but luxurious eel. The design of the images inside the magazine uses halftones with a carefully considered CMYK value to ensure only as much ink is used as necessary to limit the environmental impact of the magazine. Running through the magazine are a series of icons that have been designed to be adapted into any other issues or any merchandise that the brand may require.
